Most couples do not fight about big things — they struggle with how small things are said. Better communication is less about perfect words and more about repeatable habits.
Seven habits
- Start softly. Describe the situation and how you feel, rather than criticising your partner.
- Reflect back. “What I hear is…” before responding.
- Take breaks. If either of you is flooded, pause for 20 minutes and agree when you will return.
- Ask about needs. “What would help right now?”
- Name appreciation daily. Specific thanks builds goodwill for harder talks.
- Schedule check-ins. A weekly 15-minute check-in prevents build-ups.
- Repair quickly. A simple “I am sorry, let me try that again” is powerful.
